Laser Cutting System

Laser cutting of production parts has become one of the most cost effective tools for small to mid-sized, even large manufacturing companies. Complex cuts, repetitive cuts, proto-type parts are all done easily and accurately on a Kern Laser Cutting System. Custom fabricators (job shops) and manufacturers are able to nest or group parts in their CAD software, then cut full sheet stock to maximize yield.

Kern Electronics & Lasers, Inc. will build custom laser cutter tables, larger than standard sizes up to 52″ x 100″, to meet the customers needs.

The construction of our laser cutter tables is unique and solid. A thick steel flat plate is mounted on heavy-duty support legs to form the frame of the table. The metal top is ground flat to insure flatness throughout the entire surface of the tabletop.

The 52 Series laser cutting systems have a 7″ deep vacuum chamber under the entire surface of the laser cutting area. The chamber is covered with aluminum honeycomb to allow any smoke and debris from the cut material to be pulled down into the vacuum chamber of the laser cutting system. The chamber has either 1 2HP blower attached to exhaust the smoke and odor from the cut material to either the outside or to the customer supplied air filtration system, depending on local regulations. Each laser cutting system has a pressurized nozzle, which can be filtered shop air from an air compressor, nitrogen, or oxygen, depending on the material being processed. An optional 2.5″ focal length assembly for cutting straight through 1″ acrylics and woods is available. High-pressure nozzles for metal cutting and dense wood cutting applications are also available with our laser cutters.

Maintenance of each laser cutting system is minimal, only a few minutes each week. This consists of periodically oiling or greasing the bearings, check the water level of the chiller for the laser (if supplied) cleaning the honeycomb and vacuum chamber, and general cleanup of the laser cutting system. The lead screws are Teflon coated and need no lubrication.

All electronic controllers for the system are manufactured and stocked at Kern Lasers. Each electronic controller is modular for easy change out. The electronic controllers will monitor, through L.E.D. lights: laser power, laser errors, air flow for pressurized nozzle, water flow for laser (if heat exchanger is used, mainly for larger lasers), emergency stop switch activation, D.C. enable of the laser power supply, 5 second delay of laser (through key switch), laser shutter switch, and remote interlock switch. The laser cutting system monitor is supplied with a key switch that can be removed for safety when laser operators are not present. The laser will not operate until the key is reinserted, turned to the ON position and a 5 second delay occurs.
